Loudoun County Preservation and Conservation Coalition
In December 2007, the Preservation Society of Loudoun County invited leaders from local heritage and environmental organizations to a meeting to discuss the idea of working together on legislative issues of common interest and concern. There was overwhelming support to establish an entity that would meet regularly and develop a legislative agenda. The name Loudoun County Preservation and Conservation Coalition was chosen to describe this alliance of organizations. The Coalition meets monthly and does much of its work through two subcommittees: the Heritage Preservation Subcommittee and the Environmental Subcommittee.
The Coalition’s agenda includes:
- advocated for the formation of a Heritage Commission, as called for in the Heritage Preservation Plan (status: passed)
- participating as stakeholders in providing edits and changes to the Heritage Preservation Plan (status: passed)
- opposed the proposed PATH power line alignment in northwest Loudoun (status: on hold)
- supporting the preservation in place of the historic Broad Run Toll House at Routes 7 and 28 (status: in progress)
- working with the County and VDOT to ensure the realignment of The Woods Road does not compromise the Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve (status: in progress)
- supporting the adoption of the County Energy Plan (status: passed)
- establishing a long-term agenda for local and state legislative action and involvement by member organizations
- writing a bi-weekly column, titled In Our Backyard, on heritage and environmental issues for Leesburg Today and Ashburn Today
- supporting the Board of Supervisor’s adoption of a resolution supporting the Journey Through Hallowed Ground (status: passed)
- advocating for the Board of Supervisor’s reaffirmation of the Heritage Preservation Plan (status: passed)
- supporting the new Historic District Guidelines (status: passed)
On December 4, 2011, the Coalition will hold an event called In Our Backyard: A Celebration of Loudoun’s Historic and Environmental Heritage. The event is free and open to the public. Click here for more information.
